Carrie W. Rishel is an assistant professor in the Division of Social Work at West Virginia University. She received her doctorate (2004) and MSW (1999) from the University of Pittsburgh. Her research focus is children’s mental health, specifically the prevention of child mental health problems. Recent publications in this area examine risk and protective factors related to children’s mental health, and addresses implications for practitioners and policy-makers in the prevention of child mental health problems. A synthesis of her work and interests in this area is found in the 2007 publication, Rishel, C. W. (2007). Evidence-based prevention practice in mental health: What is it and how do we get there? American Journal of Orthopsychiatry, 77(1), 153-164. Dr. Rishel teaches courses in the MSW program related to generalist and direct social work practice and social work research. Based on her work in children’s mental health she has developed a MSW elective entitled, Child Mental Health: Promotion, Prevention, and Treatment. Future plans include applying knowledge regarding salient risk and protective factors related to child mental health to the development of preventive interventions targeted to children most at risk for the development of mental health problems.
