Carmen Abreu

MSW, MPA, LGSW, Adjunct instructor, Mental Health Therapist

Carmen Abreu is a current contract therapist at Wellspring Family services providing community based individual and family therapy to adults, teens, and children in Monongalia and surrounding counties, many of whom are at-risk or referred to by DHHR or the court system.  She joins the School of Social Work with a background in community and clinical social work and experience with diverse populations and systems in West Virginia and inner city Los Angeles, California. She has spent her career in a variety of settings including with adolescents in a residential drug treatment center, families impacted by trauma, undergraduate students at WVU as a former Retention Success Coach, Instructor and academic advisor,  former LEND Social Work trainee with the Center for Excellence in Disabilities, and has years of volunteer and internship service in the areas of foster care, child welfare, domestic violence, human trafficking, group counseling, program management, education, and outreach. Through her experiences, Carmen is passionate about helping students and client to overcome adversity. Carmen is also interested in preventing social worker burnout, addressing the stigma of postpartum depression, parenting and child development, and Integrating holistic wellness with mental health. In addition to her work as a therapist, Carmen enjoys providing support to the community through an international organization supporting mothers, and combatting justice issues such as Human Trafficking and Extreme Poverty through advocacy and fundraising.
