Q – Do I have to complete all 50 hours of community service before I can apply
to the major?
A – No, but students need to state the estimated date of completion at the time
they apply to the major. Hours must be completed by time of admission into the
major.
Q – Do the 50 hours have to be volunteer hours?
A – No, but paid hours must have prior approval from the BSW Program
Director.
Q – Do I have to do all 50 hours at the same agency?
A – No, students can complete the hours at several different agencies, but the
Social Work Human Service Activity form must be completed for each agency documenting
number of volunteer hours.
Q – Can I also do a minor in another discipline?
A – Yes, students can do a minor in any other discipline.
Q – Can I take some upper level SOWK courses (like the SOWK elective)
prior to being admitted into the major.
A – No, upper level SOWK courses are restricted to SOWK majors
only.
Q – Can I start the SOWK major in the spring semester?
A – Yes, students may change their major at any time; however, their time to graduate
may be impacted and they should contact the BSW Recruitment & Advising Coordinator before
switching.
Q – Can I take GEFs or other required courses while in the SOWK program?
A – Yes, students continue to complete the GEFs upon entering the major.
Q – Can I take classes over the summer?
A – Yes, students can take any liberal arts courses offered during the summer sessions
Q – Can I do the SOWK program part-time?
A – Yes, with permission from the BSW Program Director
Q – Do I have to take Math?
A – Yes, students are required to take a Math course from group A.
Q – What types of jobs will I be able to get with a BSW?
A – A wide variety of employment settings are available for social workers, including
foster care, adoption, probation and parole, public assistance, day care services,
school social services, services to veterans, social services in a medical or
mental hospital, drug and alcohol programs, recreational services such as Boy
Scouts, YWCA, rehabilitation centers, state and local government agencies,
nursing homes, research, social action, and fund raising.
