Audrey Gibb
Audrey Gibb began the PhD program in Social Work at West Virginia University in the fall of 2024, driven by a passion to assist individuals with substance use disorders (SUD). Having previously worked in an inpatient treatment facility and as a case manager in a community corrections program, Audrey has firsthand experience with the challenges faced by people in need of support. She recognizes that many of these challenges stem from systemic, macro-level barriers that her current education and credentials cannot fully address. This realization fueled her desire to further her education in order to create broader, more meaningful change.
The flexibility of WVU’s PhD program allowed Audrey to continue working while learning from professors who have significantly influenced her journey as a social worker. A key highlight of the program has been the opportunity to collaborate with peers who share her passion for helping individuals with SUD. Looking forward, Audrey plans to apply her PhD education to advance treatment options and influence policy reform, aiming to remove barriers and improve access to care for those living with SUDs.
Audrey's research centers on mental and behavioral health, community engagement, and social justice. She is particularly interested in a holistic approach to substance use disorders (SUDs) that integrates the treatment of co-occurring mental health conditions while emphasizing collaboration with community organizations to ensure comprehensive support. Additionally, Audrey is passionate about developing educational resources that empower local communities, foster advocacy, and enhance access to care for those in need.
