Michael C. Richards
Michael joined the PhD program in Fall 2023, drawn to its Appalachian focus within
WVU's scholarly culture. His research centers on community development and organization, which reflects his current work and scholarship. Michael values the close collaboration
with experienced researcher-scholars in the small cohort setting of the PhD program. His career
goals include teaching, research, and community organizing.
Gerard LaGuardia
Gerard started the program in Fall 2023, after completing both his BSW and MSW from WVU. His
primary research focus centers on mental health, including practice effectiveness, program evaluation and quality outcomes, suicide risk assessment, and
safety plan implementation. Having spent the majority of his professional career
in the mental health field, Gerard's research interests directly align with his
commitment to improving mental health practices and reducing stigma. He notes
that a highlight of the PhD program is the encouragement from faculty to
explore diverse educational and professional development opportunities beyond
coursework. Looking forward, Gerard plans to continue his work in
mental health, leveraging the PhD degree to improve access and effectiveness of mental health services.
