Social Work Ethics

At the West Virginia University School of Social Work, ethical practice is the foundation of our profession. Our students and faculty are committed to upholding the highest standards of integrity, professionalism, and accountability in all areas of social work.
Guiding Ethical Standards

NASW Code of Ethics

All social work students at WVU adhere to the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Code of Ethics, which sets the ethical principles and professional responsibilities for social workers. This code emphasizes:
  • Service – Prioritizing the needs of individuals and communities.
  • Social Justice – Challenging social injustices and advocating for equity.
  • Dignity and Worth of the Person – Respecting all individuals and promoting self-determination.
  • Importance of Human Relationships – Recognizing relationships as central to social work.
  • Integrity – Acting in a trustworthy manner.
  • Competence – Continuously developing and applying professional skills.

Technology & Ethical Practice

As technology continues to shape the social work field, students also follow the NASW, ASWB, CSWE, & CSWA Standards for Technology in Social Work Practice. These standards ensure ethical use of technology in areas such as:
  • Online and remote client interactions
  • Confidentiality and data security
  • Professional boundaries in digital communication
  • Ethical decision-making in telehealth and social media

Ethical Decision-Making in Practice

At WVU, students learn to apply ethical principles to real-world social work practice. Through coursework, field education, and professional development, we emphasize:
  • Recognizing and addressing ethical dilemmas
  • Practicing cultural humility and inclusivity
  • Upholding confidentiality and informed consent
  • Advocating for vulnerable populations
By integrating these ethical principles into their professional identity, WVU Social Work students are prepared to make a meaningful impact in the communities they serve.
